Even pro Internet surfers have been duped by less than honest websites which appear to display positive results for unclaimed money claims no matter what name you might enter into their system.

Unclaimed Money Fraud

Looks like Delaware get the award for most abuse in abandoned property.

It was reported today that Delaware Finance employees may have stolen up to one millions dollars in unclaimed money. These guys were quite sneaky!

Here's an excerpt:

Finance Department employees may have stolen as much as $1 million in the last two years using an intricate fraud scheme targeting refunds for unclaimed stock certificates, bank accounts and other abandoned assets that revert to state ownership.

Abandoned financial property -- known as escheat -- is one of the state's largest revenue sources, bringing in about $364.9 million last year alone. Money comes from abandoned assets that have been dormant for five or more years or unredeemed retail store gift cards.

Finding Texas Unclaimed Money

Texas unclaimed money is estimated to be in the multi millions.

Considering that many states try to hide these unclaimed funds from their citizens, it is refreshing to see local newspapers jumping into the action and helping resident find their unclaimed money in Texas.

The following story comes from the Daily Times:

The Texas Comptroller’s Office has published its annual list of unclaimed property, which includes the names of 152,000 people in the state who have at least $250 owed to them.

The Daily Times now has a copy of the list available at its front desk.

The unclaimed property could include a dormant bank account, a forgotten utility deposit, uncashed check, unclaimed investment income, securities, or family heirlooms from an abandoned safe deposit box.

Alabama Unclaimed Money

I found an interesting post about Alabama unclaimed money and how much of the property is turned over to the state. Read the story here...

They report to update their database once per year, so it's important to search often.

The Alabama site adds:

Unclaimed assets are reported in the name or Social Security number of the owner(s) along with any owner information (if available).

The Treasurer's office will periodically update this database to include new names reported and to remove those which have completed the claim process and have been returned to its rightful owner(s).
